India-MiddleEast-Europe Trade Corridor (IMEC) and its possible impact on India's GDP
Abstract
This paper’s main research objective is to analyze, estimate and evaluate the India-MiddleEast-Europe Trade Corridor (IMEC) and its possible impact on India’s GDP in the medium to long run. In this paper, we provide a detailed analysis of the erstwhile versions of the corridor through economic history and on the possible impact of this agreement on India’s GDP in the coming years. We look at the economic potential in the corridor given the current economic realities of countries in the region, the possible advantages in terms of cost reductions including lower transport costs, easing of infrastructure and regulatory constraints and enhanced trade competitiveness from a global and a more specific Indian perspective. We would also look at the possible impact of this corridor on the state of global trade fragmentation if any given the large economies involved in particular India. We also hope to quantify the potential impact of the IMEC agreement on India’s trade and its GDP in the medium to long run. Some of the questions that are to be explored include: What are the key trade related constraints that IMEC helps to solve? How does the historical and current perspective of this route make it geographically suitable for consistent trade? What are some of the geo-political challenges for the IMEC? What are the contours of the IMEC agreement thus far and what can be done to optimize its potential? Which are the most likely products or services that emanate in this corridor? Through these questions, we hope to understand the main goal of the paper to understand the potential impact of the IMEC agreement on Indian GDP in the medium to long run.
